It’s Magnolia season!

Sophy Robertson - Head Gardener

This morning as I walked through the gardens I noticed sure signs that our Magnolias will be out in full bloom very shortly.

I’m hoping this gorgeous weather we’re having today is here to stay as, more often than not, the Magnolia flowers succumb to the frost cutting their colourful display short.

We have a huge abundance of Magnolias at Athelhampton, they must have been somebody’s favourite a long time ago. When Alfred Carte De Lafontaine writes about the formal gardens he mentions one very special Magnolia -Magnolia delavayi ! He describes it as one of the finest Chinese Magnolias and I can’t help but agree! It has large crinkly leaves with an almost blue hue to them.

If you are coming to Athelhampton to see our Magnolias this year make sure to keep your eye out for this beautiful Magnolia! You’ll find it growing on the outside of the Kitchen Garden wall along the Canal Pond!
